Saint Peter, born Simon, is one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus and is considered the first pope of the Catholic Church. A native of Bethsaida and the brother of the Apostle Andrew , he was a humble fisherman before being called by Christ, who renamed him "Peter" (from the Greek Petros , meaning "rock") as a sign of his future mission. Peter is often seen as the leader of the apostles, playing a central role in the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. Although he denied Jesus three times before the crucifixion, he repented deeply and became a fervent witness to the Resurrection. After Pentecost, he preached zealously, especially in Jerusalem, before traveling to Rome, where he suffered martyrdom under the Emperor Nero, crucified upside down out of humility. His feast day is celebrated on June 29 with Saint Paul .

Who was Saint Peter?

Saint Matthew, also known as Levi, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and the presumed author of the first Gospel of the New Testament. Before his vocation, he worked as a tax collector , a profession despised by the Jews of the time, making his conversion all the more significant. Called by Jesus while sitting in the customs office, Matthew leaves everything to follow Christ, symbolizing the power of divine grace. His Gospel, written primarily for a Jewish audience, emphasizes Jesus as the expected Messiah, in keeping with Old Testament prophecies. Tradition records that he preached in Palestine, and then in distant lands such as Ethiopia, where he is said to have died a martyr. His feast day is celebrated on September 21 .
