Rare oval silver reliquary with a glass front, containing a precious relic of Saint Matthew the Apostle, one of the Twelve, author of the first Gospel and a privileged witness to the life of Christ. The relic, carefully laid upon a background of ancient red fabric, is identified by a handwritten label in Latin: “S. Matthaei AE.”, the traditional abbreviation of Sancti Matthaei Apostoli et Evangelistae.
Surrounding the sacred fragment, a refined decoration in gilt paper, forming a radiant display alternating solar motifs and stylized points, evokes a luminous halo intended to enhance the evangelical and apostolic dignity of Saint Matthew.
The ensemble has remained in its perfect original condition, retaining its ancient glass, its ecclesiastical seal, and its silk sealing threads still perfectly intact, attesting that the reliquary has never been opened since its creation.
Authenticated relics of Saint Matthew the Apostle are particularly sought after, due to his exceptional role within the early Church: a former tax collector called by Christ in the midst of his work, author of a foundational Gospel intended for Judeo-Christian communities, and, according to tradition, an ardent missionary to the far reaches of the East. His very ancient cult spread rapidly throughout Christendom, where his testimony as a man converted and transformed by grace has inspired generations of believers.

Saint Matthew, once a tax collector and later a disciple of Christ, embodies one of the most beautiful narratives of conversion found in the Gospel. Through his immediate response to the Lord’s call, his work as an evangelist, and his martyrdom attested by ancient traditions, he remains one of the foundational figures of the Christian faith. His message, centered on the fulfillment of the Scriptures and divine mercy, continues to guide believers along the path of justice, truth, and forgiveness.
