Saint Hippolytus is a 3rd-century Christian martyr, known for being a priest and theologian in the Roman Church. Initially opposed to papal policies, he became an adversary of Pope Saint Pontianus, but the two were later reconciled in the mines of Sardinia, where they were exiled. Hippolytus is often considered one of the first theologians to write important dogmatic writings, particularly on Christological issues and divine unity. After his exile, he was martyred by the Emperor Maximinus Daia around 235, and is buried in the Catacombs of Hippolytus in Rome. His witness of reconciliation and fidelity to the Christian faith made him a model of repentance and courage. He is commemorated on August 13 in the Roman Martyrology.
