Saint Hippolytus (170–235) was a theologian and priest of the early Church, known for his scholarly works and his role in early theological debates. He is considered the first antipope, having challenged the authority of Pope Callixtus I over doctrinal differences. However, reconciled with the Church before his death, he is venerated as a martyr. Saint Hippolytus was exiled during the reign of Emperor Maximinus the Thracian and is said to have died a martyr on the island of Sardinia. He is famous for writing The Refutation of All Heresies , a critique of the heretical doctrines of his day. His martyrdom testifies to his fidelity to Christ despite persecution. His feast day is celebrated on August 13.
