The Gorcum Martyrs were a group of 19 Catholic clergymen, mostly priests and monks, who were executed in 1572 during the Eighty Years' War. Captured by the Beggars, a group of Protestant rebels, they were imprisoned in Brielle, Netherlands, and subjected to severe torture to force them to renounce their faith. They categorically refused to abandon their beliefs, particularly regarding the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and the authority of the Pope. On July 9, 1572, after months of suffering, the 19 martyrs were hanged. Their sacrifice is a testament to their unwavering loyalty to the Catholic Church. They were canonized in 1867 by Pope Pius IX. Their feast day is celebrated on July 9.
