Saint Matthew, also known as Levi, was a Roman tax collector before becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. He was one of the twelve apostles and wrote the Gospel according to Matthew, which is one of the four gospels of the New Testament. After the death of Jesus, he preached in Ethiopia and Mesopotamia before dying as a martyr in Iran or Ethiopia. He is revered as one of the most important Christian saints and is often depicted with a book to symbolize his Gospel.
