Saint Bartholomew, also called Nathanael, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. Little is known of his life, but it is said that he preached in India and Armenia before being martyred by being flayed alive and crucified upside down. He is often represented holding his own skin as an attribute, in reference to his torture. His feast is celebrated on August 24 in the Catholic Church and on June 11 in the Orthodox Churches, he is the patron saint of butchers, tanners and bookbinders.
