Rare gilt bronze reliquary with a glass front containing a relic of Saint Thomas the Apostle, one of the twelve disciples of Christ. The relic, resting on a red silk background, is identified by a handwritten label in Latin: S. Thomae Ap.” (abbreviation of Sancti Thomae Apostoli). The ensemble is in good condition of use, retaining its original glass, its ecclesiastical seal, and its silk sealing threads, all still present, attesting that it has never been opened.

Authenticated relics of Saint Thomas the Apostle are particularly rare, due to the very early dispersal of his remains throughout the East and Europe as early as the High Middle Ages. Recognized fragments are generally preserved in major shrines, notably in Ortona (Italy) and in Mylapore (India).

Saint Thomas the Apostle, often called “Didymus” (the Twin), was one of the twelve disciples chosen by Jesus. Known for his initial skepticism regarding the Resurrection, he acknowledged the divinity of Christ by proclaiming: “My Lord and my God!”. After Pentecost, tradition holds that he evangelized Persia and then India, where he founded several Christian communities that still exist today. His incredulity became a symbol of faith born of a personal encounter with the Risen Christ. He died a martyr, pierced by lances near Mylapore, in southern India. His tomb is still venerated there as one of the oldest Christian sanctuaries in Asia. Saint Thomas is celebrated on July 3 by the Catholic Church.
