Saint Rose of Lima (1586–1617), born Isabel Flores de Oliva, was the first canonized saint of the Americas. Born into a Spanish family settled in Peru, she chose from childhood a life of prayer, penance, and mortification, inspired by Saint Catherine of Siena. Refusing marriage, she dedicated her life to Christ by joining the Dominican Third Order. She lived in a small cell in her garden, devoted to charitable works and contemplation. Despite many physical sufferings, she maintained unwavering faith and profound humility. She died at age 31, surrounded by a strong reputation for holiness. Canonized in 1671, she is the patron saint of Peru, Latin America, and the Philippines.
