Saint Francis of Paola (1416-1507) was a hermit and founder of the Order of Minims, dedicated to humility and penance. Born in Calabria, Italy, he chose a life of asceticism and prayer at a young age. His reputation for holiness attracted many disciples, and he founded his order in 1435. He preached charity, humility, and rigor, refusing all wealth. Called to France by the dying King Louis XI, he became his spiritual advisor. He performed many miracles, including healings and crossing straits on his cloak. He died at the age of 91 and was canonized in 1519. He is the patron saint of sailors and the elderly.
