Saint Francis of Assisi, born in 1181 in Assisi, Italy, is the founder of the Franciscan order. The son of a wealthy merchant, he gave up his fortune to lead a life of poverty and prayer. Known for his deep love of nature and animals, he preached a message of peace, simplicity and respect for all creation. In 1224, he received the stigmata, the wounds of Jesus' crucifixion, becoming the first saint to bear them. He was canonized in 1228, two years after his death. Saint Francis is revered today as the patron saint of environmentalists and animals. His Song of Creatures is one of his most famous works, celebrating the beauty of nature and the glory of God.
