Saint Clare of Assisi (1193–1253) was the disciple and friend of Saint Francis of Assisi, sharing with him the ideal of a poor life entirely dedicated to God. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, which would later take the name Poor Clares, and consecrated her life to prayer, contemplation, and evangelical poverty. Filled with ardent faith, she firmly defended the austere rule of life she had chosen for herself and for her sisters. Her spiritual life was marked by a profound mystical union with Christ, lived in humility and sacrifice. Tradition recounts that she miraculously repelled Saracen invaders by raising the Blessed Sacrament, thus demonstrating the power of her trust in God. She died in 1253 and was canonized only two years later by Pope Alexander IV. She remains today a radiant figure and a model of faith, courage, and absolute love for Christ.
