Saint Anthony of Padua, born in 1195 in Lisbon as Fernando Martins de Bulhões, was a famous Franciscan priest and monk. Known for his eloquence, he quickly became one of the greatest preachers of his time. Converted to the Franciscan life after discovering the martyrdom of the first Franciscans in Morocco, he devoted his life to preaching the Gospel and defending the poor. Saint Anthony is particularly venerated as the patron saint of lost objects, as his prayers were said to find what was misplaced. He died in 1231 in Padua, where a grandiose basilica was erected in his honor, attracting pilgrims from all over the world. Canonized only a year after his death, he is considered one of the most popular saints in the Catholic Church.
