Saint Agatha, virgin and martyr of Sicily, lived in the 3rd century and was a victim of the persecutions of Emperor Decius. Refusing to renounce Christ and to yield to the advances of Governor Quinctianus, she suffered horrible torments, notably the mutilation of her breasts, before dying around the year 250 in fidelity to her faith. From the earliest centuries, her cult spread widely, and her name is included in the Roman Canon of the Mass. Patroness of Catania, she is especially invoked against eruptions of Mount Etna, which are said to have ceased several times thanks to her intercession. She is also the protectress of women suffering from breast diseases. Her relics, preserved and venerated in the Cathedral of Catania, still attract countless pilgrims today. Her feast is celebrated on February 5, a day of light and fervor for all Sicily.
