Saint Agapitus was a 2nd-century pope known for his role in defending the Christian faith against persecution by the Roman Empire. He was elected pope in 535 and served during a period of internal turmoil for the Church, particularly due to Arian heresies and tensions between different Christian communities. Agapit worked to maintain the unity of the Church and to support persecuted Christians. He is also credited with ordering a synod in Rome to strengthen ecclesiastical discipline. His life ended in martyrdom in 536, probably during persecutions under the Emperor Justinian. He is commemorated on April 20 in the Roman Martyrology for his fidelity and commitment to the service of the Church.
