A discipline is a small scourge (whip) used as an instrument of penance by members of certain Christian denominations (including Anglicans, Lutherans and Roman Catholics among others) in the spiritual discipline known as mortification of the flesh.
The use of flagellation among certain religious people dates back to ancient traditions and is often associated with extreme ascetic practices. Religious people who practice flagellation do so with the aim of purifying themselves spiritually and mortifying their flesh. This practice can be considered a form of extreme bodily discipline and penance to atone for sins. Some religious people believe that flagellation strengthens their relationship with God and helps them draw closer to the suffering of Christ. However, it should be noted that this practice is not common in all religious traditions and is often considered controversial and fringe.
