Discipline, an instrument of penance resembling a small whip, is used by adherents of some Christian denominations such as Anglicans, Lutherans, and Roman Catholics, as part of the spiritual practice called mortification of the flesh.
Flagellation, an ancient tradition linked to extreme ascetic practices, is adopted by some religious people in order to achieve spiritual purification and mortify their own flesh. This intense form of corporal discipline is seen as a way of doing penance to atone for sins. Some believers believe that flagellation strengthens their relationship with God and brings them closer to the suffering of Christ. It is important to note, however, that this practice is not widespread in all religious traditions and often arouses controversy due to its marginal nature.
