The penitential tool called discipline, having a similar appearance to a small whip, is used by members of some Christian denominations such as Anglicans, Lutherans and Roman Catholics, as part of the spiritual practice known as mortification of the flesh.
Flagellation, an ancient tradition associated with extreme ascetic practices, is adopted by some religious people in order to achieve spiritual purification and mortify their own flesh. This intense form of bodily discipline is seen as a way of doing penance to atone for sins. Some believers believe that flagellation strengthens their bond with God and brings them closer to the suffering of Christ. It is important to note, however, that this practice is not widespread in all religious traditions and that it often generates controversy due to its marginal nature.
