Sainte Lucie is a Christian martyr of the 3rd century, venerated as one of the greatest saints. Born in Syracuse, Sicily, she dedicated her life to God and refused to marry, which led to her persecution under the Roman Empire. According to legend, she is said to have plucked out her own eyes to preserve her purity, and God restored her sight. She thus became the patroness of the blind and visually impaired. Her feast is celebrated on December 13, especially in Scandinavian countries where she symbolizes light in the heart of winter.
