Rare 19th century Symbolist and esoteric curiosity object representing a gilded bronze rooster claw concealing a folding blade.
This fascinating cabinet of curiosities piece takes the form of a rooster’s claw rendered with remarkable naturalistic realism. The scaly textures, sinewy joints, and sharp talons are finely sculpted in gilded bronze with a superb antique patina, giving the object a presence that is at once precious and deeply unsettling.
Hidden within the claw itself unfolds a fine folding blade, entirely retractable and invisible once folded back into the structure of the object. This concealed mechanism reinforces the mysterious and metamorphic nature of the piece, situated at the crossroads of naturalism, Decadent symbolism, and ritual object.
Since Antiquity, the rooster has occupied a particular place within the European imagination. Associated with vigilance, the passage from darkness into light, protection, and solar forces, it frequently appears in folk traditions, alchemy, and certain esoteric currents of the 19th century. Here, the isolated — almost fetishized — claw acquires a singular dimension, evoking certain apotropaic artifacts or talismanic objects preserved in occult cabinets and Symbolist collections of the late century.
The presence of this blade secretly integrated into the animal form further heightens the fascinating ambiguity of the object. More than a simple accessory, this piece belongs to those strange and theatrical creations sought after by collectors of Decadent curiosities: hybrid objects combining transformation, concealed power, animal symbolism, and an unsettling aesthetic.
A particularly evocative piece with strong visual presence, ideal for a cabinet of curiosities, an esoteric collection, or a Symbolist interior.
Beautiful antique patina on the gilded bronze.
