Saint Stephen is the first Christian martyr, known as the "Protomartyr". He was one of the seven deacons chosen by the apostles to serve the first Christian communities in Jerusalem. Stephen was a fervent preacher, filled with the Holy Spirit, and he courageously defended the faith in Jesus Christ. During a trial before the Sanhedrin, he was accused of blasphemy and sentenced to stoning. Before dying, he prayed for his executioners, following the example of Jesus. His martyrdom, recorded in the book of the Acts of the Apostles, makes him a symbol of fidelity and forgiveness. His feast day is celebrated on December 26 in the Catholic Church.
