Saint Sebastian is a Christian martyr of the 3rd century, often depicted tied to a stake and pierced with arrows. A Roman soldier converted to Christianity, he is said to have secretly supported the Christians persecuted under the Emperor Diocletian. Denounced, he was sentenced to death and riddled with arrows, but miraculously survived. Treated by Saint Irene, he confronted the emperor again, who then ordered his final execution by beating. He became one of the most venerated saints of the Middle Ages, invoked against epidemics. His cult spread throughout Europe, and many works of art represent him. He is the patron saint of archers, soldiers and victims of the plague.
