Saint Sebastian was a Roman soldier and a secret Christian convert. He was martyred under Emperor Diocletian for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. According to legend, he survived a first attempt at being killed by arrows, but was eventually beaten to death by order of the emperor. He is revered as the patron saint of archers, soldiers and athletes and is often depicted tied to a tree and pierced with arrows. His feast day is celebrated on January 20 in the Catholic Church.
