Saint Peter is one of the most famous apostles of Christianity, often considered the first pope of the Catholic Church. Originally from Bethsaida in Galilee, his name was Simon before Jesus named him Peter, meaning "rock," symbolizing his future mission as builder of the Church. A fisherman by trade, he became a devout disciple after being called by Jesus. He is known for his intense faith, though punctuated by moments of doubt, such as his denial of Jesus before the crucifixion. Peter preached extensively after Christ's resurrection, playing a key role in the spread of Christianity. He is said to have been martyred in Rome, crucified upside down, according to tradition. His tomb now lies beneath St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
