Saint Peter was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and is considered the first pope of the Catholic Church. He was from Bethsaida, a fisherman by profession, and met Jesus when he was fishing on the Lake of Galilee. Peter denied Jesus three times before his crucifixion, but was forgiven and played an important role in spreading Christianity after Jesus' death. He died as a martyr in Rome, crucified upside down according to tradition.
