Saint Paul, also known as Saul, was born in Tarsus in Cilicia (present-day Turkey) around AD 5. He initially persecuted Christians, but after a mystical experience on the road to Damascus, he is converted to Christianity. He then traveled throughout the Roman world, preaching the gospel and writing letters that became an important part of the New Testament. He was imprisoned several times and finally beheaded in Rome under Emperor Nero around AD 67. He is revered as one of the principal Christian saints and considered one of Christianity's most important missionaries and theologians.
