Saint Paul, also known as Saul, was born in Tarsus in Cilicia (now Turkey) around the year 5. He first persecuted Christians, but after a mystical experience on the road to Damascus, he is converted to Christianity. He then traveled throughout the Roman world, preaching the Gospel and writing letters that became an important part of the New Testament. He was imprisoned several times and finally beheaded in Rome under Emperor Nero around the year 67. He is venerated as one of the main Christian saints and considered one of the most important missionaries and theologians of Christianity.
