Saint Maur, disciple of Saint Benedict of Nursia, lived in the 6th century and was one of the first Benedictine monks. Born into a noble Roman family, he was entrusted at a young age to Saint Benedict at the monastery of Monte Cassino. He is especially known for his deep obedience, illustrated by the episode in which he walked on water to save another monk, Saint Placidus. Sent to Gaul, he founded the abbey of Glanfeuil (now Saint-Maur-sur-Loire) around 543, spreading the Benedictine rule in the West. Saint Maur is venerated as a model of monastic life, combining prayer, labor, and discipline. His cult became widespread in the Middle Ages, especially in France. He is often invoked for relief from rheumatic illnesses.
