Saint Lawrence of Rome was a 3rd century Christian deacon, martyred under the Emperor Valerian. He is famous for his charity towards the poor, whom he actively supported by distributing the Church's goods. When asked to hand over the treasures of the Church, he presented the poor as the treasures of the Church. As a result, he was tortured on a hot grill, becoming the patron saint of cooks. Saint Lawrence is revered as a martyr and an example of devotion to Christian charity. His feast day is celebrated on August 10.
