Saint Lawrence was a 3rd century Christian deacon and martyr, born in Osca in Spain. He was responsible for distributing church property to the poor and is said to have offered all of the church's wealth to the Roman governor rather than handing it over to the imperial authorities. He was tortured and burned alive on a grill, becoming the patron saint of cooks. His feast day is celebrated on August 10.
