Saint Dominic, born Dominic de Guzmán (1170-1221), was a Spanish priest, founder of the Order of Preachers, better known as the Dominicans . A man of great faith and remarkable intelligence, he devoted his life to preaching and fighting heresies, especially the Cathar heresy in the south of France. He advocated an austere life, centered on poverty and the spread of the word of God. In 1215, he officially established his religious order, approved by Pope Honorius III in 1216. The Dominicans played a key role in the intellectual formation, theology and evangelical mission of the Catholic Church. Saint Dominic is also associated with the spread of the rosary as a tool of prayer. His feast day is August 8.
