Saint Basil the Great, born in 329 in Caesarea of Cappadocia (today in Turkey), is one of the Fathers of the Church and a central figure of Eastern Christianity. A theologian and bishop of Caesarea, he greatly influenced Christian doctrine through his writings and sermons, particularly against Arianism, a heresy that contested the divinity of Christ. He is best known for his monastic rule, the foundation of many religious orders, which advocates community life, prayer, and helping the poor. Saint Basil is also admired for his dedication to the poorest, having founded hospitals and hospices. His spiritual work has marked the history of Christianity, and his feast day is celebrated on January 1 in the Orthodox Church and January 2 in the Catholic Church.
