Saint Augustine of Hippo, a major figure in Christian thought, lived in the 4th century in the Roman Empire. Converted to Christianity after a tumultuous youth, he became bishop of Hippo in North Africa. His major work, “The Confessions”, relates his spiritual quest and his conversion.
