Saint Aloysius of Gonzaga, also known as Saint Louis of Gonzaga, was a 16th-century Italian Catholic saint. Born into a noble family in 1568, he chose to renounce his social position to devote himself to a life of piety and service. Aloysius became a Jesuit and distinguished himself by his devotion, his intense prayer and his love for the most needy. He spent his time caring for the sick during an epidemic of plague in Rome, where he eventually contracted the disease and died at the age of 23 in 1591. Saint Aloysius is revered as the patron saint of young students and of the sick, and his feast is celebrated on June 21.
