King Saint Louis, also known as Louis IX, ruled France in the 13th century. He is famous for his piety and justice, having promulgated numerous legal and social reforms. Saint Louis also led two crusades, including the Seventh Crusade in Egypt. His reign is marked by the construction of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris and by his central role in the affair of Christ's Crown of Thorns. His death in 1270 in Tunis during the Eighth Crusade enhanced his reputation as a saint and he was canonized in 1297. He remains an emblematic figure of the medieval French monarchy.
The relics of the body of King Saint Louis are scattered in several sacred places around the world.
