Saint Gerard Majella was born in Italy in 1726 into a modest family. He was first apprenticed to a tailor and then entered the Redemptorist congregation. His reputation for holiness spread rapidly and he became known for his charity towards the poor and the sick. He died aged 29 in 1755, and became the patron saint of mothers, unborn children and midwives. He is celebrated on October 16 in the Catholic Church.
