Elegant 19th-century reliquary in silvered bronze, of oval form, presenting a particularly refined and original composition.
The piece is distinguished by its two-tier structure: at the center of the main reliquary is inserted a secondary reliquary, forming a small independent theca, containing an identified relic of the True Cross. This arrangement creates a true mise en abyme, reinforcing both the legibility and the highlighting of the sacred fragment.
The fragment is presented within a delicate frame, set against a purple textile background, a color traditionally associated with penance and the Passion of Christ. It is surrounded by a radiant decoration in gilt threads and spiral motifs, evoking a luminous halo that subtly emphasizes the sacred nature of the relic.
The ensemble is protected by glass and set within an openwork silvered bronze frame, adorned with stylized vegetal motifs characteristic of the 19th-century taste inspired by Baroque forms.
This type of reliquary with an autonomous internal theca is of particular interest, reflecting a clear intention to highlight the relic. It is not a simple assembly, but a composition conceived around a central element, designed as the focal point of devotion.
The relic of the True Cross
Relics of the True Cross are among the most important in the Christian tradition. Directly linked to the wood of the Cross upon which Christ was crucified, they have occupied a central place in devotion since the earliest centuries.
The cartouche visible in the inner theca, bearing the inscription “Cruce D.N.” (Crucis Domini Nostri), clearly attests to the identification of the relic according to ecclesiastical usage.
Presentation and symbolism
The composition is based on a rich and controlled contrast: the deep red textile background of the main reliquary evokes the blood of Christ, while the purple background of the internal reliquary refers to the Passion and penance.
The radiant decoration in gilt threads, arranged around the central theca, acts as a true symbolic irradiation, presenting the relic as a source of spiritual light. This enhancement, both restrained and expressive, reflects a refined sense of composition and hierarchy of sacred elements.
The presence of a relic of the True Cross, combined with a careful presentation and a coherent state of preservation, gives this ensemble real interest, both for collecting and for devotion.
