Rare 18th-century gilt bronze reliquary with a glass front containing a first-class relic EX OSSIBUS of Saint Thaddeus the Apostle.

This circular reliquary features a mount in antique gilt bronze, now patinated by time, with its truncated conical suspension loop preserved. The glazed front protects an interior composition typical of radiant 18th-century mountings.

The background consists of a deep purple textile, serving as a liturgical setting for the ensemble.

At the centre unfolds a decoration in the form of a mystical sun composed of radiating gilded blades, converging towards the relic set within a small circular cartouche. A peripheral frieze of metallic cannetille forms a protective crown around the sacred field.

The relic appears in the form of a dark fragment fixed at the centre of the radiance.

It is identified by a handwritten label in phylactery form:

“Ex Oss. S. Thaddaei Ap.”
Ex Ossibus Sancti Thaddaei Apostoli

Translation: From the bones of Saint Thaddeus the Apostle

It is therefore a direct bone relic of Saint Thaddeus (Jude Thaddeus), one of the Twelve Apostles of Christ, often invoked as the saint of desperate causes.

The presence of a bone relic of an Apostle confers upon this reliquary a truly foundational significance, touching the very roots of Christianity. The Apostles are not merely saints among others: they are the direct witnesses of the living Christ, those who received his teaching from his own lips and were entrusted with carrying the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Their spiritual authority is constitutive of the Church itself, symbolically built upon their testimony and martyrdom. To possess or venerate an apostolic relic thus meant, for both the faithful and religious communities, to inscribe themselves within a direct lineage linked to the historical origin of the Christian faith.

Saint Thaddeus, often identified with Jude Thaddeus in the Latin tradition, belongs to this select circle of the Twelve. A missionary of the earliest period, tradition situates him evangelising the eastern regions — Mesopotamia, Syria, Armenia — where he is believed to have suffered martyrdom. His figure became especially prominent in popular devotion as an intercessor for desperate causes, further intensifying the fervour of his cult. In the 18th century, the period of our reliquary, it was above all his status as an Apostle and early martyr that grounded the spiritual value of his relics.

Historically, apostolic relics were preserved with the utmost care. Most remained fixed in the great European pilgrimage centres, often enshrined within major altars or monumental reliquary shrines. Their fragmentation was rare and strictly controlled by ecclesiastical authority. Thus, bone fragments attributed to the Apostles appearing in private or conventual reliquaries of the 18th century almost always testify to high-level ecclesiastical networks — episcopal donations, exchanges between congregations, or prestigious pious foundations.

The radiant mounting in the form of a mystical sun that surrounds the relic here takes on a particularly powerful meaning. More than a simple decoration, it visually expresses the apostolic mission: that of a light received from Christ and diffused throughout the world. The gilded rays symbolise the expansion of the Gospel from Jerusalem to the nations, radiating through the preaching and sacrifice of the Apostles. Placed at the centre of this radiance, the relic becomes not only the bodily trace of the saint, but also the symbolic point of origin for the spread of the Christian faith itself — an apostolic heart radiating the light of Salvation through the centuries.
