Saint Rainier of Pisa (1117-1161) was at first a young merchant leading a worldly life before converting deeply to Christ. Driven by an ardent desire for perfection, he became a hermit and led a demanding ascetic life, marked by prayer and penance. He also undertook pilgrimages to the Holy Land, where he served the poor and sick with great charity. Upon returning to Pisa, he withdrew into solitude, but his reputation for holiness attracted many faithful. Miracles, especially healings, were attributed to him during his life and after his death. His tomb, in Pisa’s cathedral, quickly became a place of pilgrimage. As patron of the city, he remains a shining figure of humility and evangelical fidelity.
