Rare silver reliquary with a glass facade, containing the relics of Saint Francis of Assisi

The relics are fixed on a silk background and are decorated with silver thread. The relics are identified in Latin on two handwritten labels as:

Ex Tunica et Ciliis: Of the tunic and the hair

This label indicates that the relics contained in the reliquary come from:

  • of the tunic worn by the saint (2nd class relic),

  • and its hair (probably from the beard or body - 1st class relic).

The word "Ciliis" is a Latin term for hair (often eyelashes or fine hairs), but in hagiographic contexts it is sometimes used loosely to refer to any venerable body hair.

Sancti Francisci Assisiensis: From Saint Francis of Assisi

Not opened.

Ecclesiastical seal and silk threads present.
