Saint Lucy is a 4th-century Christian martyr from Syracuse, Sicily. She is venerated for her faith and devotion to God, refusing to renounce Christianity despite Roman persecution. According to legend, she tore out her own eyes to offer them to a suitor, hence her role as protector of the blind and those suffering from eye diseases. She is often depicted holding a tray bearing her eyes. Her feast day is celebrated on December 13, Saint Lucy's Day.
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, born in 1090, was a French Cistercian monk and reformer of the Church in the Middle Ages. Founder of Clairvaux Abbey in 1115, he advocated a return to rigor and simplicity in monastic life. His influence extended beyond the walls of his abbey, playing a key role in the reform of the Cistercian order and in promoting the Second Crusade. A theologian and mystic, he wrote numerous spiritual treatises and defended devotion to the Virgin Mary. He was canonized in 1174 and is celebrated on August 20.
