Rare 18th-century silver reliquary with a glass front containing a precious Marian relic.

This reliquary features an antique silver mount, now patinated by time, whose surface preserves traces of oxidation and wear attesting to its age.

The glass front protects an interior composition arranged around a deep red textile background, a liturgical color associated with sacrifice but also frequently used to visually enhance contact relics.

The relic is presented at the center in a lozenge-shaped parchment capsule, containing a dark textile fragment. It is framed by a sober decorative arrangement composed of:

— a peripheral border made of silver metallic thread forming a regular serrated frieze,
— four gold thread volutes symmetrically arranged above and below,
— an inner golden circle defining the sacred field.

The ensemble creates a balanced composition, both simple and elegant, characteristic of certain convent reliquaries from the second half of the 18th century.

The relic is identified by a handwritten label in red ink as follows:

“Ex Velo B.V.M.”
Ex Velo Beatae Virginis Mariae

Translation: From the veil of the Blessed Virgin Mary

It is a Marian textile contact relic, originating from the veil attributed to the Virgin Mary — one of the most venerated and historically sought-after Marian relic categories.

The veil occupies a central place in Marian symbolism: a sign of purity, consecration, and divine motherhood, it also embodies the spiritual protection that the Virgin extends over the faithful. In devotional tradition, it is frequently associated with the idea of refuge and intercession.

Marian textile relics, and even more those identified as fragments of the veil, are among the rarest:

— because of the inherent fragility of the material,
— because they were preserved in major sanctuaries,
— because fragments were distributed only in extremely limited numbers,
— because of their high theological value within Catholic devotion.

Through this fragment of the veil, the faithful are invited to contemplate the maternal closeness of Mary — not only as Queen of Heaven in the theological glory attributed to her, but as a protective mother symbolically enveloping humanity beneath her spiritual mantle. In Christian tradition, the veil is not merely a garment: it is one of the most recognizable attributes of the Virgin, a sign of purity, consecration, and withdrawal from the world. Connected to her personal intimacy, it touches the most human and accessible dimension of her earthly presence. Yet this devotional significance is accompanied by a historical dimension of rare intensity. Relics of Marian textiles, and especially those attributed to the veil, are among the rarest preserved by Christianity. Their perishable nature explains the disappearance of the vast majority of the original fabrics, which were carefully safeguarded in a few major sanctuaries and only very rarely divided into fragments. Each surviving particle therefore belongs to a long history of preservation, translation, and centuries-old devotion. To possess or venerate a fragment of Mary’s veil meant, for religious communities as well as for the faithful, approaching materially a maternal presence regarded as protective and intercessory. The fabric thus becomes a relic of gentleness but also a relic of memory — a tangible trace of a figure whose earthly life remains historically elusive, and whose few preserved material remains rank among the most precious and sought-after witnesses of Christian devotion.
