Facsimile of a holy nail, third class, dating from the 19th century, having been brought into contact with a nail from the True Cross of Jesus Christ. The relic is certified by a seal bearing the imprint of the Monastery of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem in Rome.
The relics allegedly identified as the Holy Nails from Christ’s crucifixion are objects of veneration among certain Christians, particularly Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox believers. In Christian symbolism and sacred art, they are part of the Arma Christi – the Instruments of the Passion – objects associated with Jesus’ suffering. The Byzantine chronicler Socrates of Constantinople, in the 5th century, reports in his Ecclesiastical History (completed shortly after 439) that, after being proclaimed Caesar and later Emperor, Constantine ordered that all honors be granted to his mother Helena, who had been neglected by his father Constantius Chlorus. After his conversion to Christianity, Constantine sent Helena to the Holy Land in search of the Cross and the Nails of the Crucifixion. A Jew named Judas (later referred to as Judas Cyriacus in later accounts) guided her to the burial site. Several miracles were said to have confirmed the authenticity of the relics, and Helena returned with a fragment of the Cross and the Nails.
The Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem (Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme) in Rome is a Roman Catholic basilica and titular church, considered one of the seven major pilgrimage churches of the Eternal City. According to Christian tradition, it was consecrated around 325 to house the relics of the Passion brought from the Holy Land to Rome by Empress Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine I. Among the relics preserved in the Cappella delle Reliquie are a significant portion of the Titulus Crucis (the inscription from the Cross), two thorns from the Crown of Thorns, a fragment (the tip) of a Holy Nail, the finger of Saint Thomas, and three relics of the wood of the True Cross.
