According to Christian tradition, Saint Torpes was a high-ranking official at the court of Emperor Nero and lived in Rome during the 1st century. Having converted to Christianity at a time when the new faith was severely persecuted, he refused to renounce his beliefs despite threats from the imperial authorities. Remaining steadfast in his faith, he was arrested, tried, and beheaded around the year 68. Legend relates that his body was placed in a small boat together with a rooster and a dog and set adrift. Guided by Divine Providence, the vessel crossed the Mediterranean before coming ashore on the coast of Provence. The place where it landed gradually became known as Saint-Tropez in memory of the martyr. Since then, Saint Torpes has been venerated as the patron saint of the town and remains one of the most emblematic religious figures in the history of Provence.
