Saint Teresa of Avila (1515–1582) was a Spanish mystic, theologian and reformer, founder of the Discalced Carmelite Order . Born into a noble family, she entered the Carmelite convent at the age of 20, but soon felt called to reform monastic life to rediscover primitive austerity and discipline. She wrote many spiritual works, including her famous Book of Life , in which she shared her mystical visions and her experience of union with God. Teresa was also a great theoretician of prayer and meditation, emphasizing the importance of contemplation. Canonized in 1614 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, she was one of the first women to receive this title. Her feast day is celebrated on October 15. She is also the patron saint of spiritual writers.
