Saint Teresa of Ávila, born March 28, 1515 in Gotarrendura, Spain, is a prominent figure of Christian mysticism and reformer of Carmel. She entered the convent of the Incarnation in Ávila in 1535 and began a life of intense devotion. Thérèse is famous for her profound mystical experiences, which she describes in her major works like "The Inner Castle" and "The Path to Perfection". In 1562, she founded the first Reformed convent in Ávila, giving birth to the order of Discalced Carmelites. His reform is characterized by a return to a life of poverty, simplicity and strict prayer. Thérèse was canonized in 1622 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, a rare distinction for a woman at the time. His influence continues through his writings and the Carmelite reform.
