Saint Pontian, pope and Christian martyr, led the Church during a time of intense persecution under Emperor Maximin. Probably born in Rome, he succeeded Saint Urban I around 230. Faithful to his mission, he fought to maintain the unity of the Church and defend persecuted Christians, notably by reconciling the Antipope Hippolytus. In exile in Sardinia, he died around 235 from mistreatment. Venerated as a saint, he is a symbol of fidelity, courage and unity for the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on August 13, honoring his martyrdom and legacy.
