Saint Margaret of Antioch was a virgin and martyr of the 3rd century, venerated in both the East and the West. The daughter of a pagan priest, she converted to Christianity and was persecuted under Emperor Diocletian. Refusing to renounce her faith and marry a Roman governor, she endured cruel tortures. Legend tells that she defeated a dragon—symbol of the devil—by making the sign of the cross. She was ultimately beheaded, and her courage inspired generations of believers. Her cult was very popular during the Middle Ages, especially among pregnant women who invoked her for a safe delivery. She is one of the saints mentioned in the visions of Joan of Arc.
