Rare gilt-bronze reliquary with a glass front containing a relic of Saint Liborius, Bishop of Le Mans. The relic, delicately laid on a red silk ground, is identified by a handwritten label in Latin: “S. Libor. Ep.” (abbreviation of Sanctus Liborius Episcopus). The ensemble is in good condition for use, retaining its original glass, its ecclesiastical seal, and its silk sealing threads, all still present, attesting that it has never been opened.

Authenticated relics of Saint Liborius are of extreme rarity, as the greater part of his remains still rest in Paderborn, Germany, where they were transferred in the 9th century. Only a few very limited fragments were granted to other churches or convents during the Baroque period. Possessing a relic of this saint—especially one that is sealed and intact—thus constitutes an exceptional testimony to the piety and religious history of the 18th century.

Please note: trace of gilded paint on the mount.

Saint Liborius, Bishop of Le Mans in the 4th century, succeeded Saint Julian and devoted his life to evangelizing pagan Gaul. A man of peace and charity, he was an exemplary pastor, building churches and organizing his diocese with wisdom. After his death around 397, numerous miracles were reported at his tomb. His relics were transferred in the 9th century to Paderborn, in Germany, where he became the patron saint of the diocese. He is invoked against kidney stones and diseases of the bladder. His cult, a symbol of unity between France and Germany, remains alive today. His feast day is celebrated on July 23.
