Saint Leonard of Noblat (d. c. 559) was a 6th-century hermit and wonderworker , venerated primarily in France and Europe. Of noble origin, he renounced court privileges to lead a life of prayer and asceticism. He is best known for his miracles and intercession for prisoners , obtaining their release through prayer. Having become the patron saint of captives, pregnant women, and people in distress , he is often depicted with broken chains or fetters. His sanctuary at Noblat, in the Limousin region, became an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages, attracting many devotees. Canonized quickly after his death, his cult spread throughout Europe, particularly to Germany and Italy.
